Jeanne Caroline Smith Carr was born in Vermont and married Ezra Slocum Carr, a physician and professor, who taught at the University of Wisconsin before they moved to California in 1869. Ezra became a professor at the University of California, and in 1875 when he was elected state superintendent of public instruction, his wife was made assistant superintendent.
